The monarch butterfly was missing a wing, a fatal injury for a creature that is built to migrate thousands of kilometers. When Dagmar Hoffdavis ran across<\/strong> the injured insect in New York, it could not fly. He took the butterfly to the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, New York.<\/p>\n

Wildlife rehabilitation director Janine Bendicksen quickly made a plan to perform surgery on the tiny patient. She searched the center and found a dead monarch with a wing \u201cin perfect shape.\u201d Bendicksen had to be very careful during the five hour operation. She said the fragile insect could \u201cfall apart if I pressed too hard.\u201d She used contact cement, corn starch, and a thin wire to hold the butterfly in place. When the job was done, the butterfly was released. It flew away smoothly able to continue it’s journey to Mexico. <\/p>\n
